Showing the world we’re the place to be
Tourism in the Northwest is estimated to contribute £10.9 billion to the local economy; it’s an industry that’s clearly well established and growing steadily.
We’re therefore in an excellent position to attract and accommodate new visitors during and after the 2012 Games.
A tourism strategy is already in place through which improvements and investment continue to be made in the region’s tourism offer. Combining the impetus for excellence that 2012 brings with this strategy will help ensure quality and capacity in our tourism industry.
Aiming High
The existing Regional Tourism Strategy is an ideal tool for levering improvements in the industry, and so maximising the potential 2012 brings. It works to:
- Help improve business performance and the quality of products and services, and to stimulate competition
- Improve workforce skills and the attractiveness of careers in tourism
- Improve public spaces, the built and natural environment
- Encourage and support ‘signature projects’ which boost the region’s appeal to visitors
- Help drive a programme of sustainable events of national and international significance
- Improve access for visitors to the region
- Pursue a market-led approach to promoting the region and its attractions
- Providing more and better information to help visitors to plan their trips
The Northwest has an excellent mix of attractions, including our vibrant cities, beautiful natural environments, major sports offerings, cultural events, historic sites and heritage.
And whilst the 2012 Games constitute a ‘one-off’ national visitor attraction, by highlighting the Northwest as an amazing place to visit during the Games, we can achieve a step-change in the region’s tourism profile throughout the world.
