Majoring on high profile events

Staging successful major events are something we have a powerful reputation for in the Northwest. Think of Liverpool 08, the Commonwealth Games, The Grand National, Premier League football, international festivals, premier horticultural shows – we have world class event expertise in abundance, right on our doorstep.

The NWDA and key partners created a Major Events Strategy in 2004 which has proven to work very well. The results are clear in the continued winning of prestigious events for the Northwest, and the ways in which these successes ripple into the local economy and communities.

We have already established highly effective partnership working between the key local, regional, national and international agencies. These networks are proven across the spectrum of events, from arts to sports.

Recent examples include:

  • The Open Golf
  • Liverpool Biennial
  • Manchester International Festival
  • The Turner Prize
  • Visa Paralympic World Cup
  • Tour of Britain Cycle Race
  • UEFA Women’s Football Championships
  • World Swimming Championships
  • The Society of American Writers’ Conference

Strategy and delivery

Along with established partnerships and strategies, a key emerging link is the work being done by UK Sport and the National Governing Bodies of Sport. These bodies are reviewing their aspirations to host national and international events in the UK during the lead up to the 2012 Games. As a result, further opportunities for staging major events in the Northwest can be identified.

It’s proposed that the NWDA will lead the development and co-ordination of strategy in this area, working closely with partners in the region’s approach to the 2012 Games.
