Cheshire
Cheshire and Warrington have been working hard to bring the sporting, social and economic benefits of the London 2012 Games to the sub-region. Recognising that the Games provide a once in a lifetime opportunity, it established a 2012 steering group in 2008 and developed a legacy framework ‘Embrace the Games’. This seeks to co-ordinate activity around four key themes with each having a ‘Champion’ to drive this work forward:
There are a number of Games-related projects and initiatives underway in Cheshire.
Over 1,200 Cheshire and Warrington businesses have registered on www.CompeteFor.com – the procurement website for contracts relating to London 2012, and over 187 schools and colleges have registered on the London 2012 Get Set programme.
In sport, the overarching aim is get more children and young people participating in physical activity. Several Games-inspired projects are helping achieve this goal. These include Active Arcade, which aims to engage children not currently participating in sport outside school; and Street Sports, a project for getting more 11-16 year olds involved in sport. Other programmes include Fun4U, a series of residential sports camps for disabled children, and the Elite Athlete Talent Scheme. Click here for further information on our sport and physical activity legacy programme.
Ten Cheshire and Warrington sporting venues are listed in the official London 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide. The 15 Pacific Island nations of Oceania have already made arrangements to train in the Northwest ahead of the Games and MMU Cheshire and Cheshire East Council (MMUCE) are to host the island people of Vanuatu for their nation’s Pre Games Training Camp.
Cheshire and Warrington has also achieved 13 Inspire mark projects and was the first sub-region in the country to get all of its local authorities the Inspire mark for their free swimming programmes. Read about this and other Inspire projects here.
